An Artist's Sketchbook of Simple Living

March 27, 2023, Pear Tree ... I'm inviting you this afternoon to celebrate with me. You see, about four days ago, I added a new face to Rabbit Hill.
With my red shovel, and a new-blue sky above me, I planted a stick of a pear tree, four feet tall with shaggy roots. It doesn't have a name yet, but give me a day or two. . . Peter Pear? Ollie Pear? Everything needs a name.
Actually, the tree does have a name--it's a variety called pineapple pear tree, a sweeter and warmer name I can't imagine, so I'll leave it at that.
You might think it a bit strange how often I've thought about the tree since it was planted. I suspect it's because--well, this website is called Pear Tree Lane, so a pear tree is surely called for. That and the fact that there is not and never has been anything I didn't like about a pear--the color, the shape, the scent when sitting on the kitchen counter. The mellow taste!
I've been watching and waiting for the first sign, any sign, of something green to begin happening somewhere along the half-inch stalk of my new tree. So far nothing has come, but it's early.
So in the meantime, to celebrate I decided to list all the ways I could use a pear. It didn't take me long to write the list, and it won't take you long to read it, so here we go.
1. Eat it.
2. Make pear butter.
3. Sit it beside the coffee pot to add some bright-lightness to your day.
4. Bake it in a pie (and enjoy saying, "I baked a pear-pie.")
5. Write a poem about pears, or just one pear if you prefer.
6. Or better yet, a haiku.
7. Do a watercolor painting of one or two or three pears. Or a drawing.
8. Share half of a pear with your dog.
9. Cut one in chunks and put it on your cereal or in your yogurt.
10. Take a close-up picture of a pear and give it a title, then hang it up.
I'm on a roll, but go ahead, you take it from here.
PS...The beautiful tree-lined road you see in the picture above of the front of our small street is actually made up of Bradford Pear Trees, a popular landscape tree in our area. They don't produce pears, but they do bloom like this in the spring, and turn into a wonderful fall display in September.
I won't tell you what the county did to these pear trees a year ago, because it would break your heart like it did mine.
